Lancashire Day Poem 2024

My poem for Lancashire Day
Lancashire Day: November 27th

What will you do on Lancashire Day, November 27,
When darkness, fog and mist consume each hour?
A trek up Pendle Hill
Could be where you find that thrill?
Or a trundle on a tram towards the Tower?

Perhaps a bolt to Boundary Mill is more your shopping bag?
Or a bevvy in a bouncing Bolton bar?
Or to Burnley for a curry
Or a chippy tea in Bury
Or to Southport for the beer or bumper car.

If luxury’s your longing, maybe Lancaster’s your love,
Or a latte up in Lytham if you like?
To Leyland for a bargain,
Or a laugh in Lower Darwen?
Maybe lycra it to Longridge on your bike.

I wonder if Westhoughton is a good place to go walking,
Then wander down to Wigan for a pie.
They won’t do you any harm
If you whack it on a barm;
And let those folk in Yorkshire wonder why.

Behind the sticks in Warrington; splash around in Coniston;
To Oldham or to Rochdale on the bus.
To Anfield with your friend;
Or the famous Stretford End -
All places on the map that make us us.

So grab a Chorley cake and a pack of Uncle Joe’s
And savour this fine day before it’s gone.
We’re in this special club
So I’ll meet you in the pub
And we’ll celebrate the place that we come from.
